As I reflect during this time, I think about what I have experienced over the past decade – events in my personal life that seeped into my theatre life, and those in my professional career that have truly shaped who I have become. This past year, however, has been my most transformative … the year when I became a mother.

Theatre has played such an integral role throughout the pivotal moments of my life. From accepting a marriage proposal during a talkback, to embarking on a memorial tour while processing grief, to navigating morning sickness in early morning rehearsals, to giving birth on the opening night of a show I directed – theatre and art never left my side.

In this polarized time, again I see art at risk of being de-valued, marginalized, and viewed as unimportant. Artists are the first to have funding cut and the last to be considered. But much like my life, art and artists are a part of so much around me – I want my child to have access to artistic and creative experiences the way I did … I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.

So here is a call to our communities to step up and help us amplify the importance of artists and their art. Support the work that instigates critical conversations and changes lives. Acknowledge the artistic leaders who are fostering belonging and making communities safer. Show up to the theatre for the artists who pour their blood, sweat, and tears into personal, political, powerful work – and allow yourself to be transformed.

In this difficult time – sometimes we may question the point of art, theatre – I know I have – but when I think about my child’s future – theatre and art is very much a part of it.

I invite you to join me in guaranteeing that.
