Relaxed Performance 

What expect at this Relaxed Performance. 

A Relaxed Performance is designed to offer a more gentle approach to attending to the theatre. Created by arts companies in response to advocacy from parents of Autistic children, Relaxed Performances have been created to welcome anyone who may find attending the theatre stressful or overwhelming; or who previously may not have felt welcomed or comfortable in theatre spaces. This show is for you! 

At this Relaxed Performance we will: 

• Keep the house lights on (those are the lights over the audience) at around 20-30% during the performance. 

• Reduce/lower the sound cues/effects by 10% for the entire show. 

• Prepare a Fact Sheet that can help audience members prepare for the show – it covers content in the play that may be heavy, include swearing, sexual innuendo etc.; lighting and sound effects that may be fast, extra slow, jarring or shocking; and give brief instructions on how to get to the theatre, what to expect once inside, and where things will be located (washrooms, quiet area etc). 

• Leave the back row of the theatre unsold so anyone can move there at any time during the performance. 

• Set up a Quiet Space if anyone needs a break from the play at any time. 

• Support movement—at any time during the performance you can leave the theatre if needed, you will be able to return to your seat (with the help of an usher) at any time. 

• Have a limited supply of sound dampening headphones that can be signed out for the performance. 

• Welcome you to show up as authentically yourself—move around, fidget, vocalize—be you! 

At this time we will not have a full Venue Guide of Centre in the Square available. This is something we are working towards preparing. Thank you for understanding.

This fact sheet has key information about the show and the theatre that you may find useful, and that may help you to enjoy your time with us.

General things to know:

• mixed(er) is an Unwrap Theatre production.
• The performances at Centre in the Square, presented by MT Space, will be the world premiere of mixed(er).
• The performance begins at 2pm.
• There is more than one theatre/auditorium inside Centre in the Square. This performance is in the Studio Theatre.
• There are many entrances to Centre in the Square.
• The entrance closest to the Studio Theatre is off of Ellen Street.
• You can use any entrance you like.
• There are many other places to park within walking distance of the theatre.
• If you need to pick up your tickets, the Box Office will open at 10am.
• The lobby at Centre in the Square will open at 1pm.
• To enter the lobby you will need your ticket.
• There will be more than one performance/event happening at Centre in the Square on this day. Please be prepared for a busy lobby. Not everyone will be attending mixed(er).
• The concession will be open for this performance.
• Drinks and snacks can be purchased at the concession.
• The concession takes cash and debit/credit card.
• The theatre/auditorium will open at 1:30pm; at this time the ushers will open the doors and let people know they can go in and find their seat(s).
• The seating is general seating, that means that your seat is not assigned and you will not find a seat location printed on your ticket. You can choose your seat once you arrive in the theatre/auditorium.
• When you enter the theatre/auditorium, please do not take a seat claimed by someone else.
• When you enter the theatre/auditorium, please do not take an accessible seat, unless you or someone in your family/group is a wheelchair/mobility device user and/or needs these seats. 
• An usher can help you to find (a) seat(s).
• There is a coat rack available for use. The rack is not attended by a staff member.
• The lights in the theatre/auditorium will be left on at a low level during the performance.
• Overall, the volume of the sound cues will be lowered by 10% (ten percent) for this performance.
• A Quiet space will be set up for this event, if you need at break from the show at any time a member of the MT Space team, or an usher, can help you find the quiet space.
• If at any time you would like to move to an empty seat in another row, please do so.
• Please move in and out of the theatre/auditorium as needed during the performance.
• Venue guide – there is currently no venue guide for this space/for this Relaxed Performance. We are working on creating one for our next performance in this space.
• Masking – the Relaxed Performance is not a mask-mandatory performance, it is a mask-friendly performance. That means that masks are not mandated to be worn, so some people may wear masks and others may not. We invite anyone who may feel more comfortable wearing a mask in public to do what makes them feel the most safe and comfortable during the performance and wear a mask, while knowing that others may be unmasked.
• Audience are encouraged to express themselves naturally and authentically during the performance – you are welcome here.

About mixed(er)

mixed(er) is a comedic coming-of-adulthood story about Sam, a biracial woman who returns to her parents’ home in Kitchener-Waterloo after completing her undergrad. What she thought was going to be a low-key homecoming quickly spirals into chaos when she learns they are throwing her a surprise birthday party, including her White friends and only Black friend. Family wounds surface, cultural tensions flare, and a jerk chicken casserole is the final straw of her fractured identity’s back.

Between bedroom fights, hair tangles, a secret unconscious boyfriend, and a Mennonite bakery heist, Sam confronts what it means to belong — to her Black Caribbean heritage, her White mother, her friends, her city, and herself.

mixed(er) deals with, and presents, content that may be difficult for some, including: cultural identity, personal identity, racism, marriage, dating and sex, inter-cultural dating, mixed-race families, friendship, parent-child relationships, searching for family history and connection, fitting in with a social group, surprise parties, drugs, raves, swearing, and community.

About the performance:

Here are some things about the performance you may find interesting or want to watch/listen for:

• This play is a world premiere.
• There are six (6) actors in the play.
• The ‘walls’ of the set open and close through out the play to create the various environments that the scenes take place in.
• The Main settings for the play are as follows: Living Room: the walls are closed;
• Sam’s Bedroom: both walls open; Kitchen: walls facing the right side of the stage with a kitchen island on wheels; Bakery Interior: the right wall closed with countertop; Bakery Exterior: right wall closed halfway without countertop.
• The lighting changes in the play mostly occur between scenes. Sometimes the lights on stage all go fully out, but the house lights will remain on a little at all times.
• Any fast moving lighting sequences have been slowed for the Relaxed Performance.
• Music sometimes plays. Sometimes it can be loud and others it can be quiet. If it is too loud, you may want to cover your ears with your hands or put on sound dampening headphones.
• If the sound effects in the play are too loud you may want to cover your ears with your hands or put on sound dampening headphones.
• The play is part comedy, part drama. As such it has moments of tension and moments of comedic relief.
• There are moments of physicality in the play – please note that all instances of falling, hitting, kissing etc. have been choreographed and rehearsed. No one in the play is actually being harmed, and all actors have consented to the action that is taking place.
• Please make sure that mobile devices are set to silent for the duration of the play.
• When you enter the theatre/auditorium the stage curtains will be open and you will be able to see the set.
• When the performance is about to begin a host will walk onto stage and welcome you to the performance. This welcome includes a Land Acknowledgment and information about the Relaxed Performance.

• The boxes contain Sam’s belongings.
• Sam is moving home with her parents.
• Rose and Kevin are Sam’s parents.
• Rose kisses Kevin.
• Amanda arrives.

• Sam goes to her room.
• Talk of raves.

• Talk of basketball.

• Talk of aging and hip issues.

• Amanda offers to get the cake.

• Talk of going back to school for a Master’s degree.

• This is the end of the play.

• The curtain call is a chance for the audience to tell the performers how much they enjoyed the play – you can clap, say “bravo”, and even stand up from your seat as the performers bow. If it is too loud you can cover your ears with your hands or put on sound dampening headphones.
• The curtain call may take a few minutes so that all of the actors have a chance to bow for the audience.
• After the bows are over, the lights stage will go down and stay down and the lights will come up in the auditorium.
• Now is the time to leave the auditorium.
