The Majdi Bou-Matar Bursary Fund

Coinciding with the start of our Giving Tuesday campaign, MT Space launched a new initiative in collaboration with the family of Majdi Bou-Matar, in memory of our visionary, founding artistic director. All ticket sales and donations from our Honouring Majdi event on December 1st, 2022 as well as ongoing donations given through CanadaHelps will go towards establishing a new bursary fund.

This fund will be dedicated to offering financial support as well as mentorship from MT Space to a racialized, newcomer, immigrant, and emerging artist, each year.

As of December 2022 we have already raised $15,000, with a goal of raising $50,000 by September 2023 and naming the first beneficiary at the IMPACT23 Festival.

From Honouring Majdi: December 01, 2022

“We become creative in order to build a healthy society.
~Majdi Bou-Matar

This performance of The Last 15 Seconds coincides with a Giving Tuesday campaign that MT Space launched this month (November, 2022) in collaboration with the family of Majdi Bou-Matar. All ticket sales and donations will go towards establishing a bursary fund that will be dedicated to offering financial support as well as mentorship from MT Space to a newcomer, immigrant, racialized and emerging artist each year.

Majdi’s Impact

To further understand the enormous impact Majdi had on the lives of marginalized artists, we share these words from local company,
Cosmic Fishing Theatre:

“What does a bursary in Majdi’s name mean to us? A bursary in Majdi’s name that offers financial support to a newcomer, immigrant, and refugee artist is aligned with our vision and goals for a better Canadian theatre landscape that is truly inclusive.

Cosmic Fishing Theatre (est. 2015) would not be here without the revolutionary leadership and vision of Majdi Bou-Matar and Pam Patel. As emerging artists, we’ve received support and encouragement directly from MT Space, and continue our professional development under MT Space’s wing to this day.

We sorely miss Majdi. We wish we could still be making theatre with him today. We carry him with us in all our efforts and he always has a seat in our rehearsal halls. Thank you Majdi for all you have given to us, so that we may be able to give to others.”

Support the Future

“If an actor has serious issues to express they will explode—
better they explode on stage.
~ Majdi Bou-Matar
