A Rehearsal with the MT Space Young Company
Submitted by Pamela on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 12:05pm
MT Space’s Young Company is a theatre mentorship program geared towards culturally diverse and Indigenous youth from the Kitchener-Waterloo Region. Working in the studio with guest artists and facilitators to create an original work, the youth also have the opportunity to mentor with artists of all disciplines who have made an impact on their community.
On Monday, our very own Artistic Director, Pam Patel, had the chance to mentor and work with the Young Company through a variety of teambuilding, vocal, and improvisation exercises. The group had only met for the first time last week. They surprised her with their ability to work as a team and to be supportive of one another to create a safe, creative environment where there is no judgment or limitations.
I was fortunate enough to join Pam and sit in on one of their rehearsals. Much like Pam, I was astounded by the Youth's ability to work together and didn't believe that a week ago, many of them were strangers to one another. I immediately felt comfortable as I joined in through their warm up and 'ice breaker' routines, and was very impressed with the level of maturity and talent they all have. Pam led them through a variety of vocal exercises that allowed individuals to showcase their talent while the rest of the group supported them through sounds. The group worked together to encourage one another, creating a safe creative space where nothing was off limits.
Pam further led them through improvised workshops where the youth were able to explore and showcase their acting talent. They divided into groups of two and were encouraged to use limited to no dialogue. Each piece offered something different and moved me in a variety of emotions as they discussed issues that we face in society today.
The Young Company offers a space where people of all different walks of life are able to come together to not only explore theatre, music, and movement, but to learn and share their own histories, stories, and experiences. Two of the youth shared with the group their stories of what it was like to leave everything behind and move to a new country knowing no one, not speaking the language, and having to basically start their lives over.
These stories and experiences they share with one another, allow them to create an original piece that embodies theatre, music, and movement that is also meaningful to them. I am both intrigued and excited to see what they will create over the next three weeks, and have no doubt that it will be just as moving and impressive as what I saw on Monday.
Join us August 12-13 at 7pm at the KW Little Theatre for the showcase of their work followed by a talkback. Click here for more details.
